Research, lectures and other activities

Prof. Micic Kandijas was a Fulbright Scholar (host Professor Ulla Connor) and delivered several lectures as an invited speaker (Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis – IUPUI, Fulbright Occasional Lecturer Program (FOLP): San Bernardino University of California – UCSB, USA, a multidisciplinary conference in Hawaii – IPSI 2005). She was a participant of the Salzburg Symposium ‘’American Culture in the USA and other countries’’ and is a Fellow of the Salzburg Global Seminar, the Salzburg Seminar American Studies Association (SSASA). She was a Morley Scholar (host Professor John Swales). She delivered a lecture English for Medical Purposes in Belgrade: Challenges and Trends at the English Language Institute (ELI), University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA.

She delivered a lecture ‘’Teaching large groups’’ and led a Workshop on English for Medical Academic Purposes at the British Council, Belgrade (the British Council Award Winner). Prof. Micic Kandijas participated at the Panel discussion on English for Specific (Academic) Purposes at the annual IATEFL Conference, Cardiff, Wales, UK (2005). She participated at the University of Cambridge Seminar English Profile at Herceg Novi, Montenegro in 2008. She gave talks within the ES(A)P Pre-Conference Event and the Symposium English for the Working Place at the annual IATEFL Conference, Harrogate, England, UK (2010).

Prof. Micic Kandijas was an Editor of the Column “Language of Medicine” in the oldest medical journal “Serbian Archives of Medicine” of the Serbian Medical Society and was a Member of the Editorial Board of the Journal. She worked as an English Language Editor for the same Journal, the Journal of Dental Medicine of Serbia and Medical Youth (Journal of medical undergraduates, Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade). Prof. Micic Kandijas was the member of the European Professional Development Committee (EPDC), European Medical Writers Association (EMWA) and is a leader of the Advanced level Workshop (Language and Writing) “Collocations in Medical Writing and Translation” (EMWA).

Prof. Micic Kandijas was awarded the City of Belgrade Prize for Education for her Medical Dictionary. She delivered a lecture ‘’Medical English Profile in Serbia’’ at the Conference ‘’English for Medical Purposes Test’’ in Budapest, Hungary (2009)

Prof. Micic Kandijas delivered a lecture on teaching and translating English for Medical (Academic) Purposes at the annual Conference of the Fulbright Academy of Science and Technology (FAST), Heidelberg, Germany (2011). Prof. Micic Kandijas led Round Table – Panel discussion “The Prospects of LSP at University” at the 2nd international Conference on LSPs at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade (2011). During the 14th Bioethics Days, Prof. Micic Kandijas delivered a plenary lecture titled ‘Languages of Medicine – Present and Future’ at the scientific conference with international participation ‘Language of Medicine – from genesis to culture and ethics of communication’, University of Rijeka, Croatia, 2012. Together with Dr Anamarija Gjuran-Coha, Faculty of Medicine, University of Rijeka, Croatia, she led a Seminar “Language of Medicine: Features of English, Serbian and Croatian Languages of Medicine” at the 11th Conference of the European Society for the Study of English (ESSE), Istanbul, Turkey, 2012. She was the invited speaker of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Niš workshop Language in Medicine, Niš, 2012 within Continuous Medical Education accredited by the Health Council of the Republic of Serbia (A-1-2181/12). The title of the lecture: Language of Medicine Today: Incorrect use of foreign terms (particularly anglicisms) in the Serbian language of Medicine. She delivered a plenary lecture titled ‘’Translation of English medical compounds into Serbian’’ within the Lexicographic Seminar of the Institute of the Serbian Language, Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Belgrade (2012). Prof. Micic Kandijas was the organiser of the Mini-symposium titled ‘Language of Medicine yesterday, today and tomorrow’’ within the 41st symposium ‘Tendencies and innovations in medicine’’ which is held on the occasion of the Day of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade. Prof. Micic Kandijas is a reviewer of JAHR. She is a member of the Editorial Board of the international electronic journal ESP Today www.espjournal.org. She was a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of English Linguistics (IJEL). She is the Member of the Intersectoral Board for Languages for Medical Purposes (LSPs) of the Serbian Medical Society (2013-).

Prof. Mićić Kandijaš is the reviewer of numerous national and international monographs and research articles in national and international journals.

Prof. Micic Kandijas’s name as an eminent researcher was mentioned in the Serbian Encyclopaedia, Vol. 1 (A-Beob), p. 207, published by Serbian State Publisher of Textbooks, Beograd, Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Beograd, and Matica Srpska, Novi Sad (2010).

Prof. Micic Kandijas was a member of the Board for the assessment and defence of the PhD dissertation titled Linguistic Aspects of Doctor-patient Interaction in English and Serbian by Danka Sinadinovic.

Prof. Micic Kandijas was the mentor of the medical students' research article written by Ćalić, S, Vukić, T, Paunović, P: Testing Beginners' English Language I at the Faculty of Medicine, BU. International Conference of Medical Students (ICMS), Novi Sad, 2013.

From 2013, she has been a researcher of the national Project DESRIPTION AND STANDARDIZATION OF MODERN SERBIAN LANGUAGE no. 178021, Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia (coordinator Prof. Sreto Tanasić). She was the researcher of the international project Standardized Test of English in Medicine, www.standem.eu, 2009 – 2014 and is the member of the South East Applied Linguists (SEAL) Research Group, University of Klagenfurt, 2014 – Project: South East European Learner Corpus of English (SEALCE).

Prof. Micic Kandijas received a special Certificate of Acknowledgement of the Editorial Board of the professional-scientific journal Medical Youth for her contribution to the development of professional-scientific activity of the students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade. Prof. Micic Kandijas is one of the four awardees of the special Certificate for remarkable efforts and contribution in the coordination of all authors and in editing chapters in the process of the preparation of textbooks for the students of Integrated academic studies of medicine at the University of Belgrade (2017).

On several occasions, Prof. Micic Kandijas took part as a guest speaker of the Radio Belgrade (Radio Belgrade 2 Programme on Languages and Culture ‘’Path into Words’’ authored by Milan Tasic, 28 Feb. 2003) and television (RTS 1 Daily News Programme Interview on English for Medical Academic Purposes textbook, Nov. 2005, SOS TV Interview on English for Medical Academic Purposes textbook, 16 Nov. 2006 and RTS 1. Morning Programme Interview on Medical Dictionary, English-Serbian Serbian English, 20 Nov. 2007) to present her scientific and professional work.She wrote a series of texts on the topic of Public health (2012) in the daily newspaper Politika (rubric Among us). Prof. Micic Kandijas was a TV guest in the weekly programme PULSE OF LIFE edited and run by the journalist Dragutin Gregorić (SOS channel). She gave the interview to Mr. Slavko Trošelj, the Sunday issue of Politika titled The drug for humanity is optimism, April 2013. Prof. Micic Kandijas was the guest of the radio programme Said and evaded on the topic of Doctor-patient communication, author Dr Dijana Ivanović, February 2014 and 2018. Prof. Micic Kandijas organized two interdisciplinary Bioethical Society of Serbia events ‘How much patients in Serbia understand physicians’ (2014) and ‘The influence of state-of-the art technological development on the physician – patient communication’ (2015).

Prof. Micic Kandijas was the Secretary of the Serbian Association of Applied Linguistics and the Coordinator of the English for Specific Purposes/Business English Special Interest Groups (ESP/BESIGs) within the English Language Teaching Association of Belgrade – ELTAB. She was a member of the Yugoslav-Canadian Association. She is a member of the Foreign Languages for Specific Purposes Special Interest Group (president 2013-14) of the Foreign Languages and Literatures Association of Serbia (FLLAS). She is a member of the Association of Scientific and Technical Translators of Serbia. Prof. Micic Kandijas was a member of the Managing Board of the Serbian Association of Fulbright Scholars, a member of the Serbian Association of Studies in English (SASE) within the European Society for Studies in English (ESSE), Association of Applied Linguistics of Serbia (ALAS), Foreign Languages and Literatures Association of Serbia (FLLAS), Bioethical Society of Serbia, TESOL, ELTA – IATEFL, EMWA, MET, FIT, COMET, AELFE.

She has a daughter Petrica. In her spare time, Prof. Micic Kandijas is a regular attendee of classical music, theatre and art events and is a film-goer. She enjoys mountaineering and swimming.
